SSV Oliver Hazard Perry plans to sail into the Canadian Arctic Northwest Passage
The University of Rhode Island received a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to conduct a cutting-edge research and education excursion into the Canadian Arctic’s Northwest Passage. America’s newest tall ship, the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry will host the expedition.
URI’s Graduate School of Oceanography’s Inner Space Center will lead the expedition of 36 students. Two groups- each consisting of 18 students- six high school students, nine undergraduate students and three graduate students- will sail for 17-day increments. As the students conduct Artic research, they will gain navigation and sailing skills.
The scientists will depart from Newport in August 2017 and sail up to Pond Inlet in Nunavut, Canada. A film crew will meet the ship there to begin producing the two-hour, ultra-high-definition documentary for television.
