The History of the Family Circle Cup
In 1973 Family Circle Magazine sponsored the first women’s professional tennis tournament in Hilton Head Island, SC, known as the Family Circle Cup. It was the first Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) event to be broadcast on network television and the first to offer female tennis professionals $100,000 in prize money. The Family Circle Cup as the premiere event in women’s professional sports helped elevate women’s tennis on a par with men’s. Billie Jean King who founded the WTA in 1973 declared following the final match of that first Family Circle Cup, that it as an historic day in women’s sports. Since 1973, the WTA and the Family Circle Cup have encouraged young woman worldwide to pursue a career in professional sports.
In 2000 Family Circle Magazine partnered with the City of Charleston, South Carolina to build a $15 million “state-of-the-art tennis facility that would be the home to America’s oldest all-women professional tennis event.” – Family Circle Tennis Center
In 2001, this premier women’s tennis tournament relocated to Charleston, the state’s oldest and 2nd largest city, just south of the midpoint on South Carolina’s beautiful Atlantic coastline. Charleston, the “Best Tennis Town in America” became the new home of the one of the WTA premiere events – the Family Circle Cup.
The Family Circle Tennis Center also offers the residents of Charleston year-round access to one of the US’s top tennis facilities. In 2010 the Family Circle Cup joined with the Charleston Department of Recreation for ongoing financial support of their “Courting Kids Tennis Program” which targets Charleston’s inner city youth.
In 2015 the Volvo Car Company announced that it had chosen Berkeley County, SC to be the site of its first facility in the US to build Volvo cars. The $500 million factory will initially bring 2,000 new jobs to the county and eventually employ as many as 8,000. Volvo plans to build 100,000 Volvo cars a year after production begins at the Berkeley facility in 2018.
