Newport Shipyard Applies for Expansion Permit
Known as the sailing capital of America, Newport, Rhode Island attracts thousands of visitors by boat each summer. The beautiful harbor, lively regatta circuit and its charismatic town life and central location are just a few reasons why Newport is an ideal yachting destination. At the center of all of the action is the Newport Shipyard. With a full-service yard, enormous lifts, clean facilities, restaurant and fitness center all right on the harbor front- the Newport Shipyard has become New England’s yachting hub, attracting the only the best boasts on the East Coast.
As spring approaches, the Newport Shipyard is gearing up for another busy season. Eli Dana, the general manager and dock master of the Newport Shipyard explains “We had a very busy season this past summer. Boats were waiting two weeks to get into a marina.” He said he expects even more boats this summer, which is why the Newport Shipyard has applied for an expansion permit from the state Coastal Resources Management Council.
The expansion would include two new docks on the inside of the basin as well as lengthening four finger docks on the south side. Dana comments “It’s going to be the busiest summer Newport has ever seen for yachting. We have never been booked at this time of year. For July through September, we are already 90 percent booked.” In addition to many refit jobs, the aftermath of the America’s Cup will increase business. Dana explains “Once it’s finished, a lot of the big spectator yachts are coming up here.”
Currently, the Newport Shipyard can accommodate about 35 superyachts. Besides the two new floats and extension of existing floats, the marina perimeter would be expanded by 23,554 square feet to accommodate larger vessels. The total slip length of the docks would be increased by 566 feet, going from a current total of 2,833 feet to a new total of 3,389 feet. While the proposed expansion would increase the number of spots for the very large yachts by about five spaces, the number of spots would increase by multiples of that for 40, 50 and 60-foot yachts.
